Morag will cover trends in demand for English interpretation in the EU institutions, accreditation trends and more specifically what support the European Commission can offer interpreting students and new recruits. She will also address changes in the work place and the challenges faced by native English interpreters in meetings increasingly dominated by Globish.

Diederick Zanen will, in addition to recruitment, training and language priorities discuss some of the specific challenges for field interpreters who are deployed on assignment for the Court.

Speaker bios

Morag Neath
Morag is Deputy Head of the English Interpretation Unit at DG Interpretation, the European Commission’s interpreting service. She interprets from French, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch and Spanish into English.

In addition to her conference interpreting work, Morag is responsible for cooperation with English-speaking universities, the newcomers’ scheme and outreach in the UK and Ireland. She has extensive experience as chair and jury member of inter-institutional freelance accreditation selection panels and is also a regular external examiner at universities across Europe.

Diederick Zanen
Diederick holds a Master degree in Law from the University of Leiden in The Netherlands, with a specialization in International Public Law. He also studied Languages and Cultures of Latin America.

Diederick has worked in various governmental and non-governmental international organizations, among which the European Union for Coastal Conservation (EUCC), the Institute for European – Latin American Relations (IRELA) and the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (UNICTY).

He presently works in the Interpretation Unit of the Language Services Section (LSS) of the Registry at the International Criminal Court (ICC), where he is responsible for coordinating the sourcing, recruitment, training and deployment for the Registry of field interpreters that are needed to support the multilingual trial proceedings at the ICC.
